Common Types of Warehouse Material Handling Equipment

One of the biggest expenses in most warehouses is floor space. This is because most warehouse material handling equipment needs to be stored on the floor. The most common types of warehouse material handling equipment are as follows;

Forklifts and other lift trucks are used for lifting and transporting materials around industrial settings or warehouses. Many companies who handle manufacturing products will invest in their fleet of forklifts, which can be cost-effective compared to using outside temporary labor services or outsourcing this work to third-party logistics providers. Forklifts may also be used to unload semi-trailers that arrive at distribution centers, move products from storage locations to loading docks for further processing and finally load finished products back into semi-trailers for shipping purposes.

Pallet Jacks

Pallet jacks are a common type of warehouse material handling equipment. They offer an efficient and cost-effective way to move pallets quickly and other large containers with ease and safety and reduce the risk of injury common with manual handling operations. A pallet jack is a small forklift that enables the operator to raise and lower loads using its hydraulic-operated lifting arms safely. The forks can be adjusted to fit securely on different-sized pallets or skids, allowing the user to pick up loads ranging from 500 pounds (227kg) to 3,000 pounds (1360kg).

Conveyor Systems

Conveyors systems transport materials from the receiving room to the front of the warehouse. Many conveyor systems can also be used to move loads from floor to floor. They come in the following types: strand and roller or rubber belt, tray and hook, or box and pan.

Gantry Cranes

Gantry cranes are supported overhead trolley-like platforms across stationary tracks mounted on ceilings or beams in industrial settings or warehouses. They are self-contained machines that contain the motor, controls, and trolley. These cranes provide efficient movement of long or bulky objects at high levels across an industrial setting.

The material handling equipment needed in a warehouse will depend on the size, height restrictions, weight capacity needs, and frequency of use. Warehouse material handling equipment is extremely important in the shipping and receiving process, so you should always plan before purchasing or renting it.
