A single of the most disturbing element of Florida’s “Don’t Say Gay” law, which prohibits “classroom dialogue about sexual orientation or gender identity” in key colleges (and according to critics, could be applied to later grades), is the plan that simply acknowledging the existence of LGBTQ+ people today is in some way inappropriate for children. Of course, next-quality academics are not conversing to 8-calendar year-olds about sexual intercourse, but you would not know by listening to conservatives, who evidently believe that any person who opposes this regulation is in essence advocating for demonstrating young children graphic sexual imagery.
Get, for case in point Senator Ted Cruz, who a short while ago prompt that for the reason that Disney made the decision to converse out towards the bigoted Florida legislation—after acquiring backlash from its staff for at first refusing to do so—it’s naturally likely to introduce NC-17 story traces to its children’s programming.
In an particularly odd set of remarks, even for him, the Texas lawmaker opined at a reside recording of his podcast, Verdict With Ted Cruz: “I feel there are people today who are misguided, seeking to generate, you know, Disney stepping in, stating, you know, in each individual episode now they are gonna have, you know, Mickey and Pluto heading at it. Like, genuinely? It’s just like, arrive on men, these are youngsters, and you know, you could often shift to Cinemax if you want that. Like, why do you have—it used to be, look, I’m a dad. You employed to be in a position to set your little ones on the Disney Channel and be like, alright, something innocuous will happen.”
Environment aside the reality that Cruz—who after blamed a congressional staffer for his Twitter account “liking” a limited pornographic video—decided to enable people know he turns to Cinemax when he’s hunting to have a romantic night time in with Minor Ted, this type of absurd fearmongering is straight out of the GOP playbook. Plainly, Disney is not likely to depict “Mickey and Pluto likely at it,” but it’s this form of bullshit that benefits in proper-wing conspiracy theorists protesting Disney for supposedly corrupting little ones. It is also the type of thing that opens the doorway to blatant homophobia, and the notion, pushed lately by Republicans, that conversing about the mere existence of LGBTQ+ people today is synonymous with “grooming” and remaining “pro-pedophile.” (On the podcast, Cruz initially argued that conservatives should not use the “groomer” assault “lightly,” and it should be reserved for actual pedophiles, ahead of seemingly having distracted by the need to misleadingly attack Disney.) Obviously, Cruz isn’t going to seem to have had a trouble with the lots of hypersexualized (but straight) Disney people of several years previous. (You are going to have to go away that to Mike Pence, who famously took challenge with Mulan normalizing girls in the military services mainly because it could lead to…sex in the barracks???)
In other “Don’t Say Gay” news, Florida governor Ron DeSantis—last observed making use of kids as props whilst signing an antiabortion bill—has stepped up his war on Disney for getting the audacity to discuss out towards the hazardous laws. For each Politico:
